VLAN Setup

Virtual Local Area Networks (VLANs) allow you to logically segment a physical network into multiple virtual networks, improving network organization and security. This section will guide you through the basic steps of configuring VLANs in pfSense.

Understanding VLANs:

  • Purpose: VLANs allow you to create multiple virtual networks within a single physical network, improving network organization, security, and traffic management.
  • VLAN Tags: VLANs are identified by VLAN tags, which are added to network packets to indicate their membership in a specific VLAN.
  • VLAN Trunking: VLAN trunking allows multiple VLANs to be carried over a single physical link.

Configuring VLANs in pfSense:

  1. Enable VLAN Support: Ensure that your network interface cards and switches support VLANs.
  2. Create VLANs: In the “Interfaces” section of pfSense, create new interfaces for each VLAN.
  3. Assign VLAN Tags: Assign unique VLAN tags to each VLAN interface.
  4. Configure VLAN Trunking: If your network devices support VLAN trunking, configure the appropriate VLANs on the trunk interface.
  5. Create Firewall Rules: Create firewall rules to control traffic between VLANs and to the internet.

VLAN Isolation:

  • Isolate VLANs: Use VLANs to isolate different departments, networks, or security zones within your organization.
  • Prevent Cross-VLAN Traffic: Configure firewall rules to prevent unauthorized traffic from flowing between VLANs.

VLAN-Based Routing:

  • Route Between VLANs: Configure routing protocols to route traffic between VLANs within your network.
  • Inter-VLAN Routing: Use VLAN-based routing to allow communication between devices in different VLANs.

Best Practices for VLAN Configuration:

  • Plan VLAN Structure: Carefully plan your VLAN structure to ensure that it meets your network requirements and security needs.
  • Use Meaningful VLAN Names: Assign descriptive names to VLANs to make them easier to manage and understand.
  • Monitor VLAN Traffic: Use network monitoring tools to monitor traffic flow between VLANs and identify any issues.
  • Regularly Review and Update: Periodically review your VLAN configuration to ensure that it remains effective and up-to-date.
