Stevedore

It is a type of occupation which involves cargo operations i.e. loading and unloading of cargo on the ships. Other dockside functions are also involved in this job. The people working under this occupation are known as Stevedores in the UK & Europe, while in the US and other areas they are called longshoremen.

Stevedoring is a commonplace at present in some countries like Singapore, Dubai, etc. and the Freight station or freight terminal is the place from where the cargo passes through international or domestic ports. In the present scenario, heavy machinery like-trailers, cranes, forklifts, etc. are needed by the vendors. While some other related work is performed manually which doesn’t require the use of machinery for labor or clerical work. The business involving the loading and unloading in shipping is referred as stevedoring companies.

The stevedoring is governed typically by the respected country or area it is located in. Ports are operated by the government or through government’s partnership with public, in some areas. While in other areas private companies hold the contract of stevedoring operations. The stevedore must belong to a specific trade union, who operates a particular port. The union makes the decision of appointing the stevedores for the available job options usually the selection is based on the seniority of the stevedore.
