Network Layer Functions

The Network layer (Layer 3) in the OSI model provides several key functions to enable communication between devices across multiple networks. These functions include:

Logical addressing: The Network layer provides a logical addressing scheme that uniquely identifies each device on a network. These addresses are used to route data packets between networks.

Routing: The Network layer is responsible for determining the best path for data packets to travel from the source device to the destination device across multiple networks. Routers at the Network layer use routing algorithms and tables to determine the optimal path for each packet.

Packet fragmentation and reassembly: The Network layer is responsible for breaking up large data packets into smaller, more manageable packets that can be transmitted across different networks. The receiving device then reassembles these packets into the original data packet.

Quality of Service (QoS): The Network layer can provide QoS mechanisms to ensure that certain types of traffic, such as voice or video, receive priority treatment over other types of traffic. This helps to ensure that real-time applications function correctly and are not disrupted by other network traffic.

Congestion control: The Network layer can help manage network congestion by regulating the flow of traffic across the network. Congestion control mechanisms can include traffic shaping, traffic policing, and traffic prioritization.
