A comprehensive fitness assessment involves a series of measurements that help to determine the current health and fitness level of clients. There are an endless number of possible tests and measurements that trainers may use to determine an individual’s baseline fitness level. Even the military has its own standards.

Fitness assessment is needed due to
  • determine current health conditions, risks or limitations
  • learn about past injuries or surgeries
  • assess current fitness level
  • identify fitness goals, interests and motivation for exercising
  • identify appropriate training options
  • establish methods to track progress and evaluate program success
  • create a one-on-one relationship and establish appropriate expectations for both the client and the trainer

Most trainers will use one or more of the following screening tools to determine the safety of exercise for their participants.

Various assessments usually used are
  • Cardiovascular Endurance
  • Strength and Muscular Endurance
  • Flexibility Testing
  • Body Composition
