Let’s learn about Export Inspection Council (EIC). It was set up on 1st January 1964 under as a Statutory Body under Section 3 of the Export Quality Control and Inspection Act, 1963 to ensure sound development of export trade of India through quality control and inspection and for matters connected therewith. It is a consultative body to the Central Government, the head office in located in New Delhi. The Director of Inspection & Quality control is the Executive head of the EIC and is responsible for the enforcement of quality control and compulsory pre-shipment inspection of various commodities meant for export and notified by the Government under the Export (Quality Control and Inspection) Act, 1963. The Council is assisted in its functions by the Export Inspection Agencies (EIAs), which are field organizations located at Chennai, Delhi, Kochi, Kolkata, and Mumbai and have state-of-art and accredited laboratories with the required logistic support for quality certification activities. These Agencies have a network of thirty-six sub-offices and laboratories located at different ports or major industrial centers to back up the pre-shipment inspection and certification activities.

It has an experience of more than four decades in inspecting, testing, and certifying export items based on the import country’s requirements. Notably, EIC is the only organization in India with a global acceptance in the field of certification.
