Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is a term originally derived from manufacturing resource planning (MRP II) that followed material requirements planning (MRP). MRP evolved into ERP when “routings” became a major part of the software architecture and a company’s capacity planning activity also became a part of the standard software activity. ERP systems typically handle the manufacturing, logistics, and distribution, inventory, shipping, invoicing, and accounting for a company. ERP software can aid in the control of many business activities, including sales, marketing, delivery, billing, production, inventory management, quality management and human resource management.
ERP systems saw a large boost in sales in the 1990s as companies faced the Y2K problem in their legacy systems. Many companies took this opportunity to replace their legacy information systems with ERP systems. This rapid growth in sales was followed by a slump in 1999, at which time most companies had already implemented their Y2K solution.
ERPs are often incorrectly called back office systems indicating that customers and the general public are not directly involved. This is contrasted with front office systems like customer relationship management (CRM) systems that deal directly with the customers, or the e Business systems such as ecommerce, e Government, e Telecom, and e Finance, or supplier relationship management (SRM) systems.
ERPs are cross-functional and enterprise wide. All functional departments that are involved in operations or production are integrated in one system. In addition to manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, and information technology, this would include accounting, human resources, marketing and strategic management. ERP II means open ERP architecture of components. The older, monolithic ERP systems became component oriented.
Ideally, ERP delivers a single database that contains all data for the software modules, which would include:
- Manufacturing: Engineering, bills of material, scheduling, capacity, workflow management, quality control, cost management, manufacturing process, manufacturing projects, manufacturing flow.
- Supply chain management: Order to cash, inventory, order entry, purchasing, product configuration, supply chain planning, supplier scheduling, and inspection of goods, claim processing, and commission calculation.
- Financials: General ledger, cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets.
- Project management: Costing, billing, time and expense, performance units, activity management.
- Human resources: Human resources, payroll, training, time and attendance, roistering, benefits.
- Customer relationship management: Sales and marketing, commissions, service, customer contact and call center support, Data warehouse and various self-service interfaces for customers, suppliers, and employees.
- Access control: user privilege as per authority levels for process execution Customization – to meet the extension, addition, change in process flow.
ERP Basics
The acronym ERP stands for enterprise resource planning. The History of ERP
The history of ERP goes back more than 100 years. In 1913, engineer Ford Whitman Harris developed what became known as the economic order quantity (EOQ) model, a paper-based manufacturing system for production scheduling. For decades, EOQ was the standard for manufacturing. Toolmaker Black and Decker changed the game in 1964 when it was the first company to adopt a material requirements planning (MRP) solution that combined EOQ concepts with a mainframe computer.
MRP remained the manufacturing standard until manufacturing resource planning (called MRP II) was developed in 1983. MRP II featured modules as a key software architectural component and integrated core manufacturing components including purchasing, bill of materials, scheduling, and contract management. For the first time, different manufacturing tasks were integrated into a common system. MRP II also provided a compelling vision of how organizations could leverage software to share and integrate enterprise data and boost operational efficiency with better production planning, reduced inventory, and less waste (scrap).
As computer technology evolved through the 1970s and 1980s, concepts similar to MRP II were developed to handle business activities beyond manufacturing, incorporating finance, customer relationship management, and human resources data. By 1990, technology analysts had a name for this new category of business management software—enterprise resource planning.
ERP Today
From the 1990s until the beginning of the twenty-first century, ERP adoption grew rapidly, as more organizations relied on ERP to streamline core business processes and improve data visibility. At the same time, the cost of implementing ERP systems began to climb. Not only were on-premises hardware and software expensive capital investments, enterprise ERP systems often required the additional costs of custom coding, consultants, and training.
Meanwhile, ERP technology evolved to embrace the internet, with new features and functionality, such as embedded analytics. As time went on, many organizations discovered that their on-premises ERP systems couldn’t keep up with modern security demands or emerging technologies, such as smartphones.

- Microsoft Dynamics AX – Microsoft Dynamics AX encompasses functions such as financial, human resources (HR) and operations management in addition to industry specific capabilities for distributors, retailers, manufacturers, service industries and the public sector. The latest version, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3, includes integration with Microsoft Office, supply chain capabilities (warehouse and transportation management, demand forecasting and eProcurement) and retail capabilities(omni-channel, customer wish lists, assisted sales apps for mobile phone or tablet and ability for one person to complete the entire transaction). In addition, Microsoft has introduced Dynamics Lifecycle Services, a cloud service built on Microsoft Azure to structure and simplify the application lifecycle experience for Microsoft Dynamics AX.
- Oracle – Oracle offers a multitude of ERP options, but it appears to be focusing on various cloud-based ERP products such as the Oracle Financials Cloud and clouds for accounting, procurement and other areas instead of trying to sell a single “does everything” ERP suite. The company is heavily marketing these clouds with specific functions. This signals a change from the mega-suite days of the Oracle Business Suite.
- SAP – Like Oracle, SAP has taken a shift in direction in recent years. But this time, it is anchored in SAP HANA, its in-memory analytics platform. The SAP Business Suite 4 SAP HANA is the product it showcases on its website. It also has a variety of other offerings that are tailored to the size of the company and the industry vertical being served.
