Empowerment
- Empowerment is strongly linked to ownership. Moreover, in empowering our employees we give them genuine ownership of the processes they run. And, true empowerment allows them to make decisions about how to do their jobs and how to best serve customers of the company.
- Above all, Empowerment may also require significant amounts of training as it effectively enlarges the job of the employee and the additional responsibilities.
- Empowerment is most obviously visible in service organizations, whether it is the experienced midwife over-ruling a doctor in the delivery suite, or a waiter offering immediate compensation for a poor. In other words, in all situations, one of the key outcomes of empowerment is a level increase of ownership, pride, and engagement in all staff.
- A caution to note is that many organizations say ‘empowerment’ when what they mean is ‘blame’. That is to say, that they see this as a way of holding employees more responsible for the outcomes of their process without necessarily giving them more control.
