Customs and Central Excise Department
Let’s learn more about Customs and Central Excise Department. It is a part of the Department of Revenue under the Ministry of Finance and Government of India. It deals with the tasks of formulation of policy concerning levy and collection of Customs & Central Excise duties and Service Tax, prevention of smuggling and administration of matters relating to Customs, Central Excise, Service Tax, and Narcotics to the extent under CBEC’s purview. The Board is the administrative authority for its subordinate organizations, including Custom Houses, Central Excise and Service Tax Commissionerates, and the Central Revenues Control Laboratory.
Currently, the Customs and Central Excise / GST department comes under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. The agency is staffed by ministerial staff selected through SSC matric level SSC higher secondary and SSC combined graduate level exams and Executive Officers from the rank of Inspectors by SSC Combined Graduate Level Exams (SSC-CGLE) and IRS officers by civil service exam who start their careers as Assistant Commissioners/Directors in the field and within 20–25 years rise to the post of Chief Commissioners, with a few senior-most officers who become Chairman/Members of CBIC / CESTAT / Settlement Commission.
