Cable Internet
Cable Internet is a broadband internet service that uses the same infrastructure as cable television. It provides high-speed internet access to users through a cable modem. Cable internet can be provided by the same companies that provide cable TV, and often it is bundled with cable TV service.
Cable internet uses a coaxial cable to transmit data between the user’s computer and the internet service provider’s network. The cable modem is the device that translates the signals between the coaxial cable and the computer.
Cable internet offers higher speeds than traditional dial-up or DSL internet, making it a popular choice for users who require faster internet speeds for activities such as streaming video, online gaming, and downloading large files. However, cable internet speeds can vary depending on the number of users in the area and the time of day.
One disadvantage of cable internet is that it is a shared service, meaning that the available bandwidth is divided among all the users in the area. This can result in slower speeds during peak usage times. Additionally, the quality of the signal can be affected by the distance between the user’s home and the cable company’s network, as well as by interference from other electronic devices.
Broadband cable Internet access requires a cable modem and a cable modem termination system at service provider. Both are connected by coaxial cable. Cable systems can operate up to 160 km. Downstream, the direction toward the user, bit rates can be as much as 400Mbit/s to 100Mbit/s and upstream from user, ranges from 384kbit/s to more than 20Mbit/s. One downstream channel can handle hundreds of cable modems. As the system grows, the cable modem termination system (CMTS) can be upgraded with more downstream and upstream ports, and grouped into hubs CMTS for efficient management. Most Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS) cable modems restrict upload and download rates, set in configuration files which are downloaded to the modem using TFTP.
