Understanding API Release Policies

API Release Policies

Lets begin with understanding API Release Policies.

APIs is one of the common ways by which technology companies integrate with each other.Further these provide and use APIs which are considered as being members of a business ecosystem.

The main policies for releasing an API are:

Private: Firstly,  the API is only available for internal company use.
Partner: Secondly, only particular business partners can use the API.
Public: Lastly, the API is available for use of the public. .

APIs is one of the common way technology companies integrate with each other. Certainly, theses provide and use APIs.

The two options for releasing API are:

  • Firstly, protecting information on APIs from the general public. For example, Sony used to make its official PlayStation 2 API available only to licensed PlayStation developers. This enabled Sony to control who wrote PlayStation 2 games. This gives companies quality control privileges and can provide them with potential licensing revenue streams.
  • Making APIs freely available. For example, Microsoft makes the Microsoft Windows API public, and Apple releases its APIs Carbon and Cocoa so that software can be written for their platforms.

A mix of the two behaviours can be used as well.
