An integrated development environment or interactive development environment also called as IDE, is an software application which provides various facilities to computer programmers for software development. Usually an IDE consists of a source code editor, build automation tools and a debugger which are needed by the software programmer for tasks of build generation and debugging. Nowadays, IDEs have Intelli-sense coding features which gives context-related code completion as per the texct typed by the programmer.

Microsoft Visual Studio and Eclipse are the commonly known IDEs and various other IDEs like SharpDevelop and Lazarus are also popular. Each programming language has it’s own popular IDE. Many IDEs also support multiple programming language and they feature code highlighting and syntax coloring.

IDEs may also have a class browser, an object inspector, and a class hierarchy diagram, for use with object-oriented software development.
