Tutorial 1 – Creating the Sky

In Unreal Engine, creating the sky is an important step to set the mood of your project. The sky helps in establishing the environment, whether it’s daytime, nighttime, or a sunset scene. Unreal Engine has a Sky Atmosphere system that makes it easy to create realistic skies.

First, start by opening your project in Unreal Engine. Go to the Place Actors panel and search for Sky Atmosphere. Drag and drop the Sky Atmosphere into your scene. This will add the basic sky environment. Next, add a Directional Light to represent the sun. The Directional Light and Sky Atmosphere work together to create a dynamic sky. Adjust the Directional Light’s rotation to change the position of the sun and create effects like sunrise, midday, or sunset.

To make the sky more realistic, you can add a Sky Light. This helps to fill in shadows and brightens the overall scene. In the Details panel of the Sky Light, check the Real-Time Capture option to ensure the lighting updates dynamically as you adjust the scene.

You can customize the sky colors and lighting by tweaking the Sky Atmosphere settings in the Details panel. Adjust parameters like Rayleigh Scattering and Mie Scattering to control how light interacts with the atmosphere. This will let you create unique looks for your sky.

To enhance the scene further, you can add clouds. Search for Volumetric Cloud in the Place Actors panel and add it to your scene. You can change the cloud density, height, and appearance in the Details panel to match your vision.

Once you’re satisfied with the sky setup, you can test your scene by playing it in the viewport. Adjustments can be made at any time to improve the atmosphere or lighting effects. This is the basic way to create and customize a sky in Unreal Engine.
