Borders and Shading
Border and Shading is an attribute of formatting that helps in setting borders to the paragraph(s) as well as page border to display the surrounding print. It is also used to highlight any particular portion in the document using Shading option to emphasize on the important points and make the matter more eye-catching.
We can add a border to any or all sides of each page in a document, to pages in a section, to the first page only, or to all pages except the first. We can add page borders in many line styles and colors, as well as a variety of graphical borders.
Borders and Shading have the following control tabs
- Page Borders: Page Borders are used to add borders to all pages or any page in particular in the document, to pages in a section, to the first page only, or to all pages except the first etc. The page borders can be added using different styles of lines and colors, as well as a variety of graphical borders.
- Shading: This feature of Word facilitates highlighting the paragraphs or selected text from the document by using borders, applying shading, adding borders to a table or individual cell of table, use shading to fill in the background of a table.
Procedure for formatting a document using Borders and Shading
- Click on Table icon in the toolbar
- Select Auto Format command which gives a variety of borders, fonts and shading, add borders to drawing objects (including text boxes and AutoShapes) or to pictures and can enhance drawing objects by adding a gradient (shaded), patterned, textured as picture fill. This enhances the text and the document to give a better view
Background
Word facilitates the user to design its document in various ways one such feature is Background color. The background can either be a uniform color, any pattern, texture or even an image. But note that the background cannot be printed on the paper. The only purpose of Background option is to generate a Web page from the Word document. The background format will be visible only in the Web Layout view. The steps involved in setting the background color in the document are as follows
- Click on the Format menu
- Choose the Background option
- Select any color from the color list, or choose More Colors for a specific color or select Fill Effects to declare any pattern, printed watermarks or image as background
Theme
Theme is one of the features in Word to enhance the background and the components of the document. It is generally used to design a web page.
