On 14 August 1974 , Nehru had declared : ” Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge. The achievement we celebrate today is but a step , in opening of opportunity, to the great triumphs and achievements that await us. ”
Nehru’s leadership was insightful in that he had set up an agenda for independent India . Things have certainly moved since then . There has been economic advancement in several fields such as computer software production and information technology . However, much remains to be done . Poverty is still rampant in India and there has been sluggish progress in elementary education, health care, land reform and environmental protection .
What needs to be appreciated is the fact that Nehru had been able to identify visionary criteria by which the successes and failures of India’s achievement could be judged .
Freedoms are , thus among the principal means as well as the primary ends of development . This freedom – centred view with its conceptual underpinnings related to Nehru’s stirring public speech on the eve of independence , provides an enlightening perspective on the challenges facing any society, including India . This perspective remains deeply relevant in the formulation of the ends and means of development in contemporary India .

Nice Article
It is good to see someone reiterating Pandit Nehru, and not anyone from current Gandhi family. Though, one typing error Akshita. I believe you meant 1947 instead of 1974 in the 1st line. But that is alright. These errors happen.
Yes Akul it’s 1947…thanks for the correction
