As a student of Economics for almost seven years, I have gradually come to understand how our society works. The hierarchy that we assume in our democratic framework, the rights and privileges we enjoy. Also, what are the rights, some very fundamental in nature, that we as a society cannot provide to those who need it.
Human rights are rights which we all should possess, just for the virtue of being a human. In a country such as ours, the definition of human rights has seemingly become blurred in the last few years. What we have seen in the recent years, is unjustified, demeaning and mostly horrifying.
The 16th December rape, the Badaun case and the Kamduni tragedy are a few bone chilling cases which call for immediate need of safety of women across the country. Also, sexual harassment cases at workplaces and institutions also need to be looked upon, examined and scrutinised in a proper manner so that acceptable solutions come up. But that is just 30% of the Indian population whose fundamental rights are being violated every single moment.
So many people in our country are below the poverty line. They donβt have a place to live, food to eat and no means of employment. Their basic right of shelter and life has been denied to them. It is our duty to help those, provide to those who cannot provide for themselves.
Recently, a very sad incident occurred in my University and became a nationwide news in a matter of a few hours. The Calcutta Police were called inside the campus to break up a peaceful protest and eventually led to lathi charge and molestation.
It is these types of incidents which we are all protesting and fighting against. If we do not have the basic rights, right to free speech, right to safety, right to live, we do not have anything.

Good one!
My life, my rights
Absolutely true! Human rights are the most basic things we all as humans are entitled to. And nobody has the right to deny that.
