Whenever you enter a query in a search engine a list of relevant sites are displayed in a specific order.Some are ranked above others.Now why is that? That is because of a powerful web technique called Search Engine Optimization(SEO).

So what is SEO? How does it work?

SEO aims at optimizing web pages for search engines.Why? Well to increase the volume and the quality of  traffic to the website.The result? Better revenue and higher rank among the results displayed  during a query in the search engine.

Different search engines have different ranking algorithms for SEO.Google looks for the links that point to a website.Yahoo! and Bing mainly look for keywords.

Ideally, there are two ways of doing SEO

  • On-Page SEO– This includes providing good content, good keywords selection,putting keywords in the right places, giving relevant title to every page etc.
  • Off-Page SEO – This includes link building, increasing link popularity by submitting in open directories, search engines, link exchange etc.

So how do you optimize your website/blog etc for SEO?

  • Research!Reseasrch!Research!: You can’t randomly upload content and expect it to be found easily!
  • Keywords are Important!: Utilizing keywords in helps in better ranking.
  • Image Optimzation!
  • Try to reference others with links.
  • Give people a chance to subscribe to your website
  • Use social media to increase the reach of the updates on your website(or a particular page)

SEO might not be an appropriate strategy for every website, and other marketing strategies on the Internet might prove to  be more effective like paid advertising through pay per click  campaigns, depending on the site operator’s goals.

SEO is an ongoing process – not something you can do & forget. You need to have a dedicated resource, to monitor & sustain the presence on Google search engine result pages.Content is key for SEO.The era in which some SEO tricks were sufficient to get your website to rank high among search engine results has long passed.Good content has the highest likelihood to result in a higher positions in Search Engines.
