Product Manager vs Product Marketing Manager | Interview with Ms. Oluwaseun Lijoka

As Product Marketing Manager will be required to work at the intersection of product development, marketing, and sales. As product manager will be responsible to develop and implement a marketing strategy roadmap for a specific product. A Product Marketing Manager is responsible for

  • Positioning, messaging, and branding of a product.
  • Gather and process customer feedback,
  • Manage aspects of customer relations after launch.
  • Develop and implement a marketing strategy roadmap

Today we have with us Ms. Oluwaseun Lijoka – A Product Marketing Manager, a Relationship Manager, a Product Owner, and a Scrum Master. She has hands-on experience in product marketing management, partnership management, customer relations, and business development. Ms. Lijoka has extensive experience in blending technology skills with extensive Agile experience, marketing orientation, and analytical abilities to evolve product strategy.

Ms. Lijoka has completed her Master’s and Doctorate degree from Apsley Business School, London and worked in senior capacities with eminent organizations like Fidelity Bank, and Globus Bank and currently working as a Product Partnership Manager at Parallex Bank.

Question1: Can you share more about your journey and how did you develop an interest in this field?

Answer: OK so when I finish from NYC that’s in Nigeria here so when, after graduation, from undergraduates so everybody wants a new job. So, I was also looking for a new job when I applied. The next thing was I got a job in a commercial organization commercial bank here in Nigeria so that’s how it started. I was in sales from sales I got another offer with fidelity bank so that’s how it started. I had been doing certifications but I never knew how to come into sales I’ll be here.

What does an ideal day look like for a Product Marketing Manager?

Answer: As a Product Marketing Manager I sit at the intersection between the customer, the sales team and the product team so we have to work very cross-functional. Also, we work with the PM’s design designers these sales the logos in mind the public policy and also the business development team so that’s a major thing that you do and most times it’s I also spend a lot of time in meetings which cause functional stakeholders, but also deep work into building presentation and marketing strategy plan so that’s majorly and we don’t have a specific thing so it’s different thing happening but we are responsible to communicate what why and when to the market and the users that’s the major thing that you do everyday. 

What is the difference between a product manager and a product marketing manager?

Answer: OK for that managers the majors in the tool is that they they connect both the technology side the business side and the products so both managers are responsible to set up the product vision and the product road map. We don’t make any product manager do without their pull on markets we deal with the business and the products, so we conduct competitive analysis and market research we shape communication and product positioning is a major thing we do as a product manager so we identify a coherent marketing strategy for the product so that at the end, as they put on the market to money that was at the middle thing we do we identify an incoherent marketing strategy for the product and we identify product features to spot line and empower the sales team with a clear value proposition. Those are the major thing you know. 

What are the five most important skills essential to becoming a product marketing manager?

Answer: OK, the most important skills in silver marketing are that you have to love and have passion for sales and marketing and you have to have a passion for solving problems and how management is very important. You have to have a passion for user research and community management in Google Analytics. Those are the major skills that you need. 

What are the 5 most important skills essential to becoming a product marketing manager?

Answer: OK we have slack You must be familiar with this Google Docs or Microsoft Teams Trello Google forms those are the little things you must be familiar with so it’s nothing much just be familiar with the software Google Docs legal forms and Microsoft those are the major things you should be familiar with. 

What advice would you like to give our viewers who wish to make a career as facility managers?

Answer: OK if you want to be a program marketing manager the major thing you have to you start from your your environment start from where you are start from your organization start from understands what they’re doing in your organization go to your sales team ask questions start from there then you cannot now lose your responsibility towards sales so and look at what people are doing on LinkedIn you can check on LinkedIn look at what program or marketing managers are doing on LinkedIn then you can take it from there

Answer: I want to be at least useful and do everything that really matter so that is the major thing I want to make impacts everywhere I go I want to see it I want people to see Good in me so that’s the major thing I live in I live for and I think that stuff.
