`A well thought out orientation programme is essential for all new employees , whether they have experience or not`.
After an applicant has been hired or selected , he or she must be oriented and placed on the chosen job . Orientation also called induction , is designed to provide a new employee with information he or she needs to function comfortably and effectively in the organisation. A formal definition of orientation is planned introduction of employees to their jobs , their coworkers and the organisation . orientation is conducted now almost everywhere to get the candidate or applicant or student interact with its seniors , position or organisation .
Thus orientation conveys three types of information :
- General information about the daily work routine .
- A review of the organisation`s history , founding fathers` objectives,operations & products or services as well as how the employees` job contribute to the organisation`s needs .
- A detailed presentation of the organisations policies , work rules and employees benefits .
The idea is to make new employees feel at home in the new environment . effective orientation programmes reduce anxiety of the new employees by providing them information on the job environment & on supervisors, by introducing them to coworkers , and by encouraging them to ask questions.
the ease with which employees adjust to new job and work culture is often a function of the expectations they bring to the job. if expectations are realistic , adjustments will be relatively simple . if however , expectations are unreasonable , adjustment will be more difficult .In the latter case , orientation can be instrumental in modifying employee expectations .
Orientation seeks to expose new employees to all areas of the organisation . it makes new employees become productive to the company quickly . the effectiveness of an orientation programme can have a losing effect on absenteeism and turnover . the orientation programme of new employees , experienced or otherwise is gaining popularity . several blue chip companies are orienting their employees .
Induction or orientation programme is become the need of the hour . every company wants to enhance its standards , productions , market position etc . every company hires employees and expect them to work for enhancement of company`s growth . the programme makes the employees aware about the all culture of the organisation . this will reduce idle time , wastage etc. help them to work in favor of the organisation . so orientation is essential for employees .
