You are an engineer. After completing your studies you look for good jobs. You quite enthusiastically prepare a list of dream jobs to work on in the future. But your dreams are completely shattered when you fail to get your dream jobs. This is no fiction but a true story of as many as 97% of the engineers in India who did not manage to get their dream jobs just because they canโt speak English fluently!
As per a study โThe National Spoken English Skills of Engineers Reportโ, conducted by Aspiring Minds, most of the engineers in India have poor English speaking skills which obstruct their way to get high-end jobs in corporate sales and business consulting.
While the problem is even more for Tier-II and Tier-III engineering colleges in India, it is difficult to instill this even in IITs and NIITs. Engineers with good English speaking skills stand out in the crowd of job seekers and even manage to get a high-salaried job as compared to those with similar qualification and no English speaking skills. Even the HR department of well-established firms looks for English speaking individuals while inviting applicants for various posts.
In fact out of the 97% of the Engineers, many of them know English but find it difficult to communicate fluently in this language. The main reason is the inefficient school education system in disseminating good-quality English speaking skills to its students. At school level, when we aspire to be an engineer our school authorities primarily focuses on Physics, Chemistry and Maths while the due attention on English is not given and the focus is very minimal.
Now, the solution is to bring upon change in school education system. Colleges and other institutes should offer short-term courses, seminars, workshops and any other means offering soft skills to the upcoming engineers with a special corner for English fluency. This would not only boost their confidence during interviews but would also enable them to seek satisfactory employment fulfilling all their aspirations.
