MICROPROCESSOR 8086

MICROPROCESSOR 8086

Intel 8086 is the first microprocessor to be launched in the 16 bit family of microprocessors in 1978. It supports 16 bit ALU,a set of 16 bit registers and a 6 byte instruction queue.

Main features of 8086:-

1. Maximum clock frequency in 5 MHz

2. It operates in two modes i.e. maximum     mode and minimum mode.

3. Maximum memory that can be      connected to 8086 in 1MB.

4. Memory is divided into two banks:-      a) even bank    b)odd bank

5. 8086 microprocessor also supports memory segmentation.

6. 8086 supports multi programming and   multiprocessing.

7. It has 20 bit address bus and 16 bit data bus.

ARCHITECTURE OF 8086:-

The complete architecture of 8086 consists of two parts :

1. Bus interface unit: BIU’s main function is to connect the microprocessor to input/output devices and external memory via bus.

2. Execution unit: EU’s main function is decoding and executing the instructions which are fetched by BIU.
