Most of us, at some point of time have experienced that last minute jitter prior to an interview. We all have those shaky hands, wet palms, flushed face and a mind out of balance.
But why is it so? Why do we feel in such a way? Many researchers have said that the reason behind such nervousness is the way we perceive the situation. Most of us behave in such a way as if something is at stake. Moreover, the nervousness increases manifold when the job is perceived to be highly important to us. This can impact our way of presentation, increasing our anxiety and stress.
To deal with nervousness, we need to keep the following points in mind-
- Be prepared- The best way to keep calm during an interview is to do your research. When you have an idea of the surroundings we are going to enter, we feel acquainted and less nervous.
- Rehearse- Practice makes you prepared. You don’t need to exactly memorize the answers to the interview questions. It’s just that when you rehearse, you become better skilled at it.
- Arrive early and relax- Reach the interview centre early and sit by yourself gathering, breathing and relaxing before interview gets started.
- Think of interview as simply a conversation between two- Do not overburden yourself by thinking it as an interview. Rather think of it as a conversation where both the parties are finding if they are compatible with each other or not.
- Sit up straight and don’t fidegt- Don’t square your shoulders and sit straight. It will automatically project your voice in a better way. You will be seen as confident even if you are trembling inside.
- There are more jobs outside- Don’t over pressurise and burden yourself by thinking you have put all eggs in one basket. Look outside, there are many more opportunities waiting for you.
