People in India are so fascinated by white skin that they feel inadequate about themselves if they donβt use some fairness cream. Donβt you think that if your confident depends on a beauty cream, then you should really check your entire confidence section? The funny thing is that fairness cream ads show that if you donβt use their product, then you wonβt be able to become a star or an air hostessβ¦.and you wonβt probably get married. These ads make us want to believe that bb creams are our new fairy godmothers. The companies should ask themselves, βDo we really need to sell dreams to consumers and earn money? Do we really need to demean the dusky Indian skin?β
I am proud of actor Nandita Das who started the βDark is beautifulβ campaign. She has also been referred to as a brown actress by many renowned journalists. What a shame! I do not blame other actors for endorsing fairness brands but I think they should stop doing so as these creams give a fooling message to all. We should not believe these discriminating and racist acts. We all are very well educated to understand that no cream is magic that can change your natural skin tone.
For your scientific knowledge, these creams have bleaching ingredients that may irritate sensitive skin and many of them contain steroids also which are being used in these creams without any dermatologistβs permission. In 2006, the Indian association of dermatologists, venereologists and leprologists filed a petition to stop this menace. But the market is still flooded with these creams.
Itβs just a simple question I want to ask βIs white skin really worth all the fuss and heartache? I truly feel that itβs very insulting for the beautiful Indian skin that such racists creams, companies and ads have not been banned all this while.

Wow this is an important which not only women but also men need to get acquainted with its important to break this myth. Its good to see actors like Kangana coming out and not endorsing such fairness brands. Well written article π
The fair creams ads absolutely make no sense to me.I mean why are people still obsessed over skin color.
the ad makes us feel that fair people have an unfair advantage in life. And everything becomes so shiny and happy once you turn fair!
Seriously?
The entire concept behind fairness creams is extremely derogatory. Celebs should not endorse such things.

Nice writeup Vasundhara. Indeed we Indians are fascinated abt white skin and always forget abt the dusky beauties in our countries, especially in Bollywood like Bipasha Basu, Konkana Sen, legend Smita Patil and many more. Your post might help in creating awareness π

Well explained ..!!
I hope things will change. Someday people will understand dusky is beautiful
totally agreed!
but what I found during last winter, people from western country wants their skin to get tanned!
So its just a mentality of people to attain what they don’t have.
Such an amazing work. I totally agree with you
Yes!!
DARK IS BEAUTIFUL
Well said Vasundhra..:)
A very well written article
Truth being told these stupid fairness creams should be banned and a strict action needs to be taken against these companies for false advertisments.
Since, such things do affect people both mentally and emotionally Especially in our country where people are obsessed with white skin for no reason
People should stop being narrow minded about so little things that one forgets his/her own identity and acts like a puppet to such silly demands of our society
