When you enter the building, do you want to be greeted with a generous smile and a few friendly handshakes? Or just feel cold, unfriendly eyes boring into your skin, making you feel insecure? The choice is obvious but the paths are entirely different. And as you may have guessed, the path to the latter is easier but a lot less rewarding.
Everyone wants a friendly working environment where every individual is fond of the other and they all work hand in glove. But that’s more of a utopia, an idealistic desire. What can be achieved is not far from this vision. Because of the diversity in the workforce, it is impossible for each worker to have a good chemistry with every other, though a mutually beneficial relationship is much more like it.
To create such a world is not just the HR manager’s job but also your moral responsibility. Starting from the basic, the following tips might sound banal but they’re extremely effective at grass root level.
- Be polite to your co-workers and subordinates. Use casual-professional approach rather than an authoritative one.
- Focus on requesting and asking rather than demanding and ordering.
- Make them feel at ease when you’re around, make friends.
- Send good vibes, do not hold grudges.
- Competition is good but never take it personally.
- You might not want to get your pride and ego in between work, somebody else’s idea may be a lot better and you need to accept and learn from that and not sulk and envy.
- Accept good criticism and also provide for some in a polite manner.
- Work towards building a good image while maintaining work quality.
You might want to try these out. Maybe your friendly gesture can make someone’s day or even better, who knows it might lead to a long lasting relationship!
