Inland aquaculture, being an important economic sector in India, plays a vital role in providing food security throughout the world. Inland fisheries serve to ensure proteins, essential fats and micronutrients to the people. This sector is also known for providing various employment opportunities, such as commercial and subsistence fishing opportunities, to millions of people.
India has a huge potential in this sector as it has been provided with wide array of natural resources for developing marine and inland fisheries. Even after being such a great source of livelihood to the people, this sector has hardly gained any attention and is unappreciated due to accurate information unavailability. This sector is often given low priority in policy discussions relative to other issues of water.
As we know that India ranks no.2 in the global fish production and in the inland aquaculture sector, still it needs to be progressed. We can’t ignore the fact that China that holds 1st rank in the fisheries production produces one-tenth of India’s production.
India is having 325 species of ornamental fishes. This sector can contribute to the economic growth and sustainable development of aquatic resources at its great but India gains less than one percent share in this sector in the world market.
Various resources of production of fisheries are largely untapped in India. Average Growth in fish Production during 2013-14 Stands at 5.9%. There is a great need to bring in effective policy decisions to boost production of fisheries and inland aquaculture as they serve as great tools to fight poverty alleviation and malnutrition.
So addressing these needs, government is focusing on bringing Blue Revolution to boost fish production and inland aquaculture. In this respect, government has presented PPP mode i.e, public-private- partnership to ensure effective utilization of untapped resources.
