A few months back when our new PM Narendra Modi took over the charge of the nation, he shared with the masses his vision of 100 smart cities. The major objective of establishing these smart cities is to utilize resources to the optimum while facilitating ease to its citizens.
A smart city basically attempts to apply some smart solutions in order to provide the basic equipment to facilitate a decent quality of life, a clean and sustainable environment to its citizens.
Now, the basic equipment here refers to efficient public transport and infrastructure, assurance of water, electricity supply, efficient IT connectivity, e-governance and participation of citizens, security and safety, better sanitation and waste management infrastructure.
The smart solutions include -public information, grievance redressal, electronic service delivery, citizensβ engagement, waste to energy & fuel, waste to compost, 100% treatment of waste water, smart meters & management, monitoring water quality, renewable source of energy, efficient energy and green building, smart parking, intelligent traffic management system.
All Indian States will get at least one smart city.
The next step is identification of the 100 cities and for this a city challenge competition to be conducted by Bloomberg Philanthropies is envisaged. The current plan looks to select 20 cities this year followed by 40 each in the next two years.
The plan would focus on area-based development.
