At times professional social situations can be awkward, the rules are a bit different from standard social settings. The specific skills required for professionals to present themselves in a business setting are discussed below.
- Use your full name: Always use your full name in a business situation, and pay attention on how others want to be introduced. In case your name is too long or difficult to pronounce, then you can either consider an alternate name to address yourself or use a business card for reference.
- Stand when introduced to someone: When you stand then it helps establish your presence. Your presence seems negligible for others and it becomes easy for them to ignore you if you don’t stand.
- Don’t say “thank you” too much during a conversation: Use “thank you” only once or twice during a conversation else it dilutes the impact and makes you seem helpless and needy.
- Use thank you notes: Send thank you notes to everyone you want to thank. The choice between email and handwritten notes is important, regular mail may take several days to reach its destination where email are delivered immediately. This time difference seems important in case of job interview.
- Never pull out chair for someone’s: It is fine to hold open a door for your guest, but you should not pull out a chair for someone regardless of gender in a business setting.
- Do not cross your legs: It is applicable for both men and women as it can be distracting at times.
- Keep your fingers together when you point: In case you have to point at something then do it with an open palm with your fingers together. If you point with your index finger, it appears aggressive.
- Formal dinner setting: Do not push away or stack your dishes after completing your meal let the wait staff do their jobs.
- Keep the food options balanced: You should make your guest feel comfortable and accompany them by eating the same suite. In case the host follows certain dietary restrictions, consider the restaurant they’re taking you before ordering.
- Remember the host should always pay: Being the host you should pay the bill, irrespective of gender. However, you don’t want to fight over a bill, if a male guest insists on paying despite a female host’s best efforts, let him pay.
- Polite exit: While leaving from an official get together you need to be the one talking as you’re making the exit. Leave when you are talking as at that point, you are in control, and it is a much smoother exit.
