Sustainable Technologies & Environmental Projects Pvt. Ltd. (STEPS)
It is an Indian firm which discovered a way to convert plastic, organic, and electronic waste into petroleum without the usual harmful residue. So they are into energy conservation, developing environmental friendly, economic and safe technologies for the conversion of waste materials into value added products.
Their aim is to develop simple technologies for the treatment of soil, water and air and make the planet a safe and healthy place for living. This firm is the winner of Gold Medal in prestigious Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth program for three consecutive years 2007, 2008, and 2009.
STEPS Environmental Technologies
The core strength of STEPS technologies lies in extraction of value from waste at economical cost. Some of these technologies are proven successfully while some are in the process at various stages at pilot plants, prototypes and commercialization.
Here I brief only the few of its technologies
- Waste Plastics to Fuel Conversion Technologies: Many technologies have been developed to address the problem since past, but they have posed one limitation or the other. Based on this reasoning, the novel ‘POLYCRACK Process’ (Patent is pending) has been developed and successfully tested by STEPS. The main specialty of this process is that all kind of plastics, both recyclable and non-recyclable plastics are converted into petroleum fuels, which can be used as alternate sources of fuels for industrial, residential and other need.
- Biomass to Energy Conversion Technologies (Algae to Diesel Technology): Algae occupies vast areas of water bodies. Governments spend huge sums of money to clean the water bodies to remove algae. Though it is allowed to biodegrade algae over a period of time but most of the algae is wasted. So the process has been developed to combat the dual menace of fuel shortage and the contamination of water bodies by algae. This technology will act as a catalyst for the growth of rural economies through algae farms and formulate an industry that can grow algae as a profession. STEPS technology is new and far ahead in application due to its uniqueness to accept wet algae of all kinds.
