Theory of Inventive Problem Solving

TRIZ (Theory of Inventive Problem Solving)

TRIZ, also known as TIPS is derived from the ‘Theory of Inventive Problem Solving’ and is a strong problem-solving tool that supports the traditional Six Sigma Black Belt skills. Black and Green Belts often use process improvement or design methodologies such as DMAIC and DMADV, both of which rely heavily on solving business problems by optimization alone.

TRIZ works best in situations where other Six Sigma tools have not accomplished the task. It provides another way to find solutions during the improvement phase of the Six Sigma technique DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, control) or the design phase of DMADV (define, measure, analyze, design, verify). TRIZ allows project teams to globalize an issue and find examples of how people have solved similar challenges. It also supplies potential solutions to apparently contradictory issues, such as wanting a more powerful engine that is lighter or wanting something to both operate faster and more accurately.

TRIZ is a Russian acronym (Teoriya Resheniya Izobretatelskikh Zadatch) which is translated in English to the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. Its principles deal with discovering solutions to issues by using logic and data, not assumptions or intuition, which facilitate a project manager’s team in generating concrete but creative solutions. Because of the algorithmic and highly structured tactics TRIZ uses when confronting problems, it provides the necessary predictability, validity, and reliability required when successfully accomplishing a project. Rather than relying on trial and error procedures, TRIZ depends on the rigorous examination of patterns that emerge from repeating problems and their solutions, rather than the unpredictability of unstructured insight.
