Rating – It lists a number of factors to be assessed, which are then rated on a numerical scale according to level of performance, for example.

  • Outstanding
  • Exceeds requirements of the job
  • Meets the requirements of the job
  • Shows some minor weaknesses
  • Shows some significant weaknesses
  • Unsatisfactory

The rating system scales method is easy to construct, use and understand but  it is highly subjective. There is often a tendency to bunch the ratings around the average point and an overall impression can influence all the individual assessments. Performance pay is linked to an incremental scale. Accomplishment of the next point on the scale is dependent on the employee reaching a satisfactory performance rating. Pay increases based on performance ratings and awarded by a series of fixed percentage points.

The national energy performance rating is a type of external benchmark that helps energy managers assess how efficiently their buildings use energy, relative to similar buildings nationwide. The rating system’s 1–100 scale allows everyone to quickly understand how a building is performing — a rating of 50 indicates average energy performance, while a rating of 75 or better indicates top performance.

EPA, in conjunction with stakeholders, developed the energy rating as a screening tool; it does not by itself explain why a building performs a certain way, or how to change the building’s performance. It does, however, help organizations assess performance and identify those buildings that offer the best opportunities for improvement and recognition.
