Steganography

Steganography

Steganography is the art of hiding secret information within seemingly innocuous digital content, such as images, audio files, or videos. The goal of steganography is to conceal the existence of the message, making it difficult for an outside observer to detect its presence. Steganography is often used in combination with encryption techniques to provide an extra layer of security, making it even more difficult for an attacker to access the information.

One of the most popular applications of steganography is in the realm of digital forensics. Law enforcement officials and intelligence agencies use steganography to track criminal activity and monitor terrorist networks. Steganography can be used to conceal secret messages within the vast amounts of data that are transferred over the internet every day, making it difficult for investigators to detect and intercept these messages.

Despite its usefulness, steganography can also be used for malicious purposes. Cybercriminals use steganography to hide malware or other malicious software within legitimate files, making it difficult for antivirus software to detect and remove the threat. As such, it’s important for individuals and organizations to remain vigilant and take appropriate measures to protect themselves from these types of attacks.

Steganography Tools

  • WetStone Technologies’ Gargoyle (formerly StegoDetect) software can be used to detect the presence of steganography software.
  • AccessData’s Forensic Toolkit and Guidance Software’s EnCase can use the HashKeeper, Maresware, and National Software Reference Library (National Software Reference Library 2003) hash sets to look for a large variety of software.
  • Niels Provos’ stegdetect can find hidden information in JPEG images using such steganography schemes as F5, Invisible Secrets, JPHide, and JSteg .
