PPP Basics and the PPP Protocol Field

PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) is a data link protocol commonly used to connect two network nodes together over a serial communication line, such as a dial-up modem, ISDN, or leased line. PPP is a layer 2 protocol that provides a way to transmit data packets over a serial link.

PPP uses a framing mechanism to encapsulate network layer packets. It uses a header and trailer to encapsulate the data, allowing it to be transmitted across the link. The header contains a protocol field, which indicates the type of packet being transmitted, and the trailer contains a checksum that is used to check the integrity of the packet.

PPP protocol field is a 1-byte field that identifies the type of packet being transmitted. The value of the protocol field determines what type of network layer protocol is being carried in the PPP packet. For example, a value of 0x0021 indicates that the PPP packet contains an IP packet, while a value of 0x8021 indicates that the PPP packet contains an IPv6 packet.

PPP can be used for various purposes, including dial-up Internet access, connecting remote offices, and providing secure access to a network. PPP is a reliable and widely used protocol that provides authentication, error detection, and encryption capabilities.
