EIGRP Summary and Comparisons with OSPF

EIGRP (Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol) is a Cisco proprietary routing protocol that uses advanced features to provide efficient and scalable routing. Some key features of EIGRP include:

Hybrid Protocol: EIGRP is a hybrid protocol that combines the best aspects of both distance-vector and link-state routing protocols. It maintains a topology table like a link-state protocol, but instead of sending LSAs (Link State Advertisements), EIGRP sends update messages containing only the changes in the network topology.

DUAL (Diffusing Update Algorithm): EIGRP uses a sophisticated algorithm called DUAL to calculate the best path to a destination network. DUAL takes into account not only the distance to the destination but also the reliability and bandwidth of the path.

Fast Convergence: EIGRP has fast convergence times compared to other routing protocols because it uses a variety of mechanisms to quickly detect topology changes and calculate new paths to the affected networks.

Load Balancing: EIGRP supports equal-cost load balancing, which allows multiple paths to a destination network to be used simultaneously.

VLSM and CIDR: EIGRP supports both Variable Length Subnet Masks (VLSM) and Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) to provide efficient use of IP address space.

Scalability: EIGRP is highly scalable and can be used in networks of any size, from small to very large enterprise networks.

In comparison to OSPF, EIGRP is a proprietary protocol that is limited to Cisco devices. OSPF is an open standard that can be used on any vendor’s networking equipment. OSPF is a pure link-state routing protocol, whereas EIGRP is a hybrid routing protocol. OSPF uses Dijkstra’s algorithm to calculate the best path to a destination, while EIGRP uses DUAL. OSPF has a more complex configuration compared to EIGRP, but it is more widely used in large enterprise networks.
