Keyboard Basics

A keyboard is a peripheral input device used to input text, numbers, and commands into a computer or other electronic device. A standard keyboard typically consists of a set of keys arranged in a specific layout, such as the QWERTY layout commonly used in English-speaking countries.

The keys on a keyboard are typically labeled with letters, numbers, symbols, and function keys that perform specific actions or commands. The QWERTY layout was designed to reduce the likelihood of jamming the keys of mechanical typewriters by placing frequently used letter pairs far apart from each other. However, it has remained in use in modern keyboards despite no longer being necessary for preventing key jams.

Some common keys on a keyboard include:

Alphanumeric keys: These are the standard letter and number keys used to input text.

Function keys: These are special keys that perform specific actions or commands, such as opening a new document or saving a file.

Control keys: These are modifier keys that modify the function of other keys. For example, holding down the Ctrl key and pressing the C key will copy the selected text.

Arrow keys: These keys are used to move the cursor or selection in different directions.

Numeric keypad: This is a separate set of keys that resembles a calculator, typically located on the right-hand side of the keyboard. It is used for numeric input and calculations.

Modern keyboards can be connected to a computer using a wired connection, such as USB or PS/2, or using a wireless connection, such as Bluetooth or RF. They can also vary in size, shape, and additional features such as backlit keys, multimedia keys, and programmable keys. There are also specialized keyboards designed for specific tasks, such as gaming keyboards that have additional programmable keys and LED lighting, or ergonomic keyboards that are designed to reduce strain and improve comfort during prolonged use.
