Port Security and Filtering

Port Security and Filtering

Port security and filtering are two methods used to control access to network resources and prevent unauthorized access. While both techniques are used to enhance network security, they have different applications and approaches.

Port security involves controlling access to switch ports by limiting the number of MAC addresses that can connect to a port. Port security can be configured to allow a single MAC address, a group of MAC addresses, or a specific number of MAC addresses. If an unauthorized device tries to connect to the port, the switch will disable the port or take other actions to prevent the unauthorized access.

Port filtering, on the other hand, is used to filter traffic that is coming into or leaving a port. This technique can be used to block specific protocols or traffic types, such as blocking traffic to or from specific IP addresses, blocking traffic to or from specific port numbers, or blocking traffic from specific MAC addresses. Port filtering can be used to prevent unauthorized access to a network, to reduce the amount of traffic on a network, or to prioritize certain types of traffic over others.

Both port security and port filtering can be used to enhance network security, but they have different applications and should be used together with other security measures, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and access control lists.
