Strategic staffing manages the flow and transition of people into and out of the organization and the job does not end there. The functions also include the management of new hires into projects and jobs throughout the company. When new hires report for work, they have to learn the processes and functions of their new jobs. This is taken care by HR through an orientation process that explains the job descriptions, how the employee has to function and other aspects related to the job.

It is important for a company to induct new hire into their work groups in the company and manage their talent throughout the organizations. Workforce management also includes the managing of employee separations and ensures the flow of talent in the organization.

Orientation and Socialization

Organizations invest money in new hires to help them become accustomed with the job and become more productive. Many of the new hires look towards getting started quickly but they need help in doing so. Employers also make use of this opportunity to create a good first impression with new employees. Since most of the turnover occurs during the initial few months in the job it is important for the companies to help new hires to adjust to their jobs.

Orientation or on-boarding is a process of completing employment formalities with new hires. This includes the related employment paperwork, providing them identification cards, workspaces and technology such as computers, other equipment/instruments that are required for the job. The new hires are introduced with other co-workers and familiarizing them with their jobs and with the company’s work policies, procedures and benefits. Orienting new employees will ensure that time is not wasted and the new hires can reach a breakeven point quickly and start yielding return on investment for the company.

Orientation is different from training and provides the new hired with the knowledge and insights for the jobs allotted whereas training deals with skill enhancement in a classroom setting. Some companies involve new hires to gather company information, products and services by themselves and this makes orientation more fun for the new hires. This also makes the new hires meet other employees more often have formal and informal discussions and help them to get familiar quickly. Technology enables the orientation process to be more effective and efficient. Many companies use their intranet that allows employees to sign in and browse information available for the company. The joining process is also technology enabled for many large enterprises, thereby speeding up the initial formalities.
