Merging should be done only if it is a part of the strategic plan of a company so that they know what they are doing and why.
It is necessary, that a right partner is chosen for an M&A and it is for the right reasons that the merger is carried out.
If a company feels that a merger would not be beneficial or if it feels that there could be certain issues which would remain unresolved then it should walk away from the deal.
If careful planning is done on the front end a lot of pain can be avoided in the later stages.
It is necessary to spend adequate amounts on the consultants and advisors.
It is important to be prepared for various changes.
